This week students will be going online to Superkids. They will be reading the magazine It’s Tricky every night and doing a corresponding handout based upon the reading. (Please remember that you created your password.) We will be reading the magazine and going over homework in class as well.


Monday, January 11th

When reading nonfiction with your child use these Comprehension Strategies:

Extra Challenge:

Cross-Curriculum Connection /Science: Have a discussion about tornados and waterspouts and what causes them. For a fun experiment, make a tornado in a jar by filling a mayonnaise- sized jar 3⁄4 full with water. Add a teaspoon of liquid soap and a teaspoon of vinegar to the water. Add food coloring if desired. Tighten the lid and shake it so it mixes well, then swirl the jar quickly in a circular motion to form a vortex or small tornado.
Research corn-based products: Many things are made of corn. Have students use the Internet to research the large number of uses for corn in making other products.

Research the Titan flower Have students search the Internet (keyword: Titan flower) to learn more about this unusual flower. Students should write 3–4 facts they learned through their research and illustrate their findings.

Superkids – Go online read pages 6-9 In It’s Tricky

Do Know/ Wonder/ Learn Handout # 17 based upon article. Under the “K” column, students write what they know about the article from previewing. Under the “W” column, students write what they wonder. The “L” column will be completed after reading the article.

Do Design a Mask handout # 18

Extra Challenge :
Cross-Curriculum Connection/ Social Studies: Using photographs found on the Internet or in library books, have a discussion about ancient Egypt and the time of King Tutankhamen. Include the pyramids, mummies, tombs, and hieroglyphs (pictures used to represent words) in your discussion. You may also wish to search the Internet using the keywords “hieroglyph translator” for an English-to-hieroglyph translation. Students can print out their names in hieroglyphs and practice drawing the symbols.

Extra Challenge:
Cross-Curriculum Connection
Social Studies: Discuss migration as it relates to humans as well as animals. Explain that the United States grew as people migrated further west across the country in search of both adventure and a new place to live.
Art: Make origami cranes with your child. There are many sites online with directions.
